At an altitude of 1,700m, Mount Karakuni is the highest peak of the Kirishima volcano mountain range. It has a 900m-wide and 300m-deep caldera at the summit.
A favorite among trekking fans, the panoramic view from the summit is breathtaking, where one can see the Takachiho-no-Mine peak and Mount Sakurajima.
The once unobstructed view from the summit allowed one to see South Korea, and this is how the peak got its name (the Chinese characters literally translates into "Korea Peak")
